ANDERSON IS ROVERS’ LAST ACTION HERO

-

GRANT ANDERSON hit a lastditch winner as rampant Raith climbed to third place in the Championship table. The points looked like being shared after Saints’ Lawrence Shankland cancelled out James Craigen’s opener. But the hosts were consigned to a second home defeat on the trot when Anderson struck at the death. Victorious boss Ray McKinnon said: ‘I knew it would be a tough game and it proved it especially when they came at us in the second half. ‘But I thought we were excellent the way we stood up to them. ‘But we were resilient and I’m over the moon to get the win.’ Rovers took the lead with their first attempt. Ryan McCord’s free kick was only half-cleared and Craigen latched on to the loose ball to fire into the top corner of Jamie Langfield’s net. The visitors were inches away again when Jason Thomson’s teasing cross just eluded two team-mates as the ball went across the six-yard line. Shankland got the better of Kevin Cuthbert on the stroke of half-time when he guided Keith Watson’s threaded pass beyond the keeper’s outstretched right hand. It was Cuthbert who came out on top after the next joust, pulling off a fantastic fingertip save from Shankland. But Raith still had designs on victory and they went close when Stewart’s 15-yard shot flashed just wide. Craigen then almost found the net with a dipping free kick, which Langfield was alert to save. Next Rovers substitute Craig Wighton sent a header just wide as neither side looked content to settle for a point. The Kirkcaldy men were rewarded for their efforts three minutes from time when Rory McKeown’s throw-in was flicked on by Jon Daly for Anderson to apply the finishing touch.
