So how healthy is it really?
PROPONENTS claim green tea can alleviate everything from headaches to depression – but recent research has poured cold water on many of their claims.
Suggestions that the tea cuts the risk of cancer were dismissed as weak in a 2009 review involving 51 studies. Another review found that claims it reduces Alzheimer’s risk are unproven.
And although antioxidants in green tea can help burn calories, another study found no evidence of weight loss in those who drank it.
A further review found it can reduce cholesterol – but said it was unclear how much needed to be consumed.
