A saddle sore point

AS A driver I’m all f or cycle l anes in cities, but only if they are used. Yesterday, and not for the first time, I drove down a road with a wide cycle lane, only to come up behind cyclists pedalling in the middle of the road, two abreast. If so many cyclists are simply going to ignore them, why bother with cycle lanes in the first place?
