One in 5 return to parents’ home

-

ONE in five young adults has moved back in with their parents or grandparents in the last year, according to research.

Some 20 per cent of working 20 to 34-year-olds have returned to the family home in the last 12 months having previously flown the nest. In total, almost four in ten of the so-called ‘clipped wing’ generation are back in their childhood bedroom or have only recently left, housing charity Shelter found.

Just over half of these blame high housing costs for their return, while two thirds of the 527 young people polled worry that it limits their independence.
