My fare lady... Baroness Mone hails a cab

- By Tom Witherow

LAST week she was boasting about being ferried across London in a chauffeur-driven Jaguar paid for by the taxpayer.

But it seems bra tycoon Michelle Mone, who is worth £20million, knows how to take a taxi after all.

She says she even paid for it herself.

Not that it helped her turn up on time – she was almost 15 minutes late for a meeting yesterday with entrepreneurs in Glasgow.

Lady Mone, a new Tory peer, is embarking on a 50-day tour to compile a report on start-up businesses across the UK.

‘Just another day working for the Government on my time,’ she said

yesterday before moving to her next call at a job centre.

But even if the so-called start-up tsar has had to rein in her lavish driving habits, she hasn’t ditched every luxury.

Yesterday she started the day with a £35 blow dry from Taylor Ferguson, hairdresser to stars such as Millie MacKintosh and Miss Scotland, Mhairi Fergusson.

Lady Mone’s taxi switch comes after an outing in a government Jaguar sparked criticism.

She posted a picture online of her laundry drying on the car’s heaters. Later reports claimed she had made six trips in the car, despite her claiming to have used it only once.

The trip to Glasgow was her first as a peer, after officially becoming Baroness Mone of Mayfair on Wednesday. Her tour, which will result in the ‘Mone Report’, aims to help entrepreneurs in poor areas start businesses.

Yesterday she told entrepreneurs how her parents had helped her to focus on her career.

She also trotted out mantras such as ‘change is courage’ and compared running a business to the ‘circle of life’.
