PICK OF THE DAY

THE KENNEDYS, 9.30PM, BBC1

-

THE childhood of actress and writer Emma Kennedy is the source for this new comedy, which is set in the Seventies, and is swathed largely in shades of brown. The Kennedys live on Jessop Square in Stevenage New Town, and mum Brenda (Katherine Parkinson) is determined to make an impact — with a dinner party. ‘It’s a party where you have dinner,’ she explains to a baffled friend, before embarking on a quest to cook the exotic ‘lasagne’. The Kennedys’ attempts to understand this new decade are the main source of humour in an opener with plenty of gags and silly situations — many involving lothario Tim (Harry Peacock) — although there’s not much going on apart from that.
