Cost of poor policies
THE parent taking his local council to court for fining him for taking his children on holiday in term time puts i nto perspective the differences between my generation and that of today.
When I was a child, the only holidays were Wakes Weeks, holidays at fixed times every year when the whole area, including schools, closed for a week or a few days.
Many people couldn’t afford a holiday, so the holiday (a funfair) came to you. Those who could afford to go away usually went to a B&B in the nearest seaside resort.
I have little sympathy for today’s generation, complaining about their trips abroad being disrupted by their children’s schooling.
If Corbynomics is to mean anything, it should mean priority is given to ensuring everyone has food, warmth and shelter, not holidays abroad and the latest gadgets.
People should be encouraged to better themselves, to have a better standard of living than their parents. That’s a better objective for politicians than the ‘politics of envy’.
Past governments have saddled our country with debts which our greatgrandchildren will have to pay. Living within our means, as our ancestors did, is not unreasonable.
