Now classy Karen’s a Hollywood big shot

- By Julia Greenaway

IN her meteoric rise to stardom, Karen Gillan has appeared alongside some of the biggest names on TV and in Hollywood.

But now the Inverness-born actress is set for one of her biggest roles yet, in a star-studded A-list movie with Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale.

She stepped out on the red carpet on Thursday night for the premiere of her new movie, The Big Short, at the American Film Institute Fest in Los Angeles.

The 27-year-old former Doctor Who star showed off her slender frame in a figurehugging, slinky black number with a plunging neckline and low-cut back. Miss Gillan kept things simple with plain black low heels. She wore her hair in curls and went for minimal make-up, with a hint of mascara and a sweep of red lipstick.

The actress moved to the US in early 2013 to pursue her acting career after her role as the Doctor’s sidekick on BBC One. She suffered a setback, though, when sitcom Selfie was cancelled by ABC in November 2014 after it pulled in underwhelming ratings.

Also attending the premiere were fellow A-listers and stars of the movie, a dapperlooking Bale, Gosling and Steve Carell. The Big Short tells the true-to-life story of a few men who were able to make millions from the housing and credit bubble.

Bale, Gosling, Pitt and Carrell all portray major players in the creation of the credit default swap market, which was used to their financial advantage while the rest of the country suffered.

The film is based on the 2010 best-selling book by Michael Lewis, known for writing Moneyball and The Blindside, titled The Big Short: Inside The Doomsday Machine.

Actresses Melissa Leo, Marisa Tomei and Selena Gomez also feature alongside Miss Gillan in the movie.
