Rear-ly! Now academics plan to hold a ‘Kimposium’
IT’S fair to say that many have studied the frankly extraordinary proportions of Kim Kardashian’s rear end.
But now academics want a piece of the action. It seems cogitating over existentialism and empirical idealism isn’t good enough for the world’s scholars. So they’re holding a day-long ‘Kimposium’.
Professors from the US, Germany and across the UK will descend on Brunel University in West London to discuss the reality TV star and the mystifying phenomenon that makes her – and her family – so famous.
It will include talks on the societal implications of Kim’s behind and how the family have shaped discussions of race, feminism, the politics of ‘fat’ and beauty.
Meredith Jones, reader in sociology and cultural studies at Brunel, said she organised the conference to examine the family’s global influence. She said: ‘They may be vacuous and bland when they open their mouths, but they are also very powerful.’
The conference on November 26 will trace how Kim and her sisters Kourtney and Khloe moved from the edge of celebrity into the public consciousness, despite having no obvious talent.
It has divided the academic community, with Oxford University librarian Sarah Barkla saying: ‘There’s TOO much wrong here.’
