Crocs and tigers to guard drug jail

-

A NEW island prison could be guarded by tigers and man-eating piranhas – as well as crocodiles.

Budi Waseso, Indonesia’s anti-drugs tsar, has already embarked on a tour of the country to find ‘the most ferocious type of crocodile’ to guard the jail for death row drug convicts.

He insists crocodiles cannot be bribed by convicts trying to escape, saying: ‘It is also possible we may use piranhas, and because the number of personnel might not be enough, we can also use tigers.’

Despite the harsh laws, Indonesia’s corrupt prison system is awash with drugs, and inmates and jail officials are regularly arrested for offences.

Anti-drugs agency spokesman Slamet Pribadi hit back at suggestions the plan was a joke, saying: ‘Drug trafficking is an extraordinary crime and therefore the fight must also be extraordinary.’
