CLEAN UP YOUR ALPINES
IF YOU grow alpines or hardy succulents, such as aeoniums (left), give them a make-over. Few will be in flower, but if you remove all dead stems and brown or exhausted foliage, they will look prettier.
During mild spells, succulents and cushionforming alpines will gradually green up. Pay particular attention to aubrietas, removing dead or long stems. New growth will sprout from the centre.
Trim back creeping or mat-forming plants that may have exceeded their spaces. Remove small weeds and any fallen leaves.
Hairy bittercress is troublesome and is capable of setting seeds in midwinter if given a few mild days.
