BORN ON STROKE OF MIDNIGHT

-

SCOTLAND’S first baby of 2016 entered the world at the stroke of midnight.

Janaat Azam was born at Glasgow’s Princess Royal Maternity hospital, weighing 5lb 1oz.

Maureen McKenzie, the charge midwife at the hospital, said: ‘I have worked here since it opened and I started my training in 1984.

‘I can’t remember a baby being born at that time in a new year. We’ve had babies born at a minute past before but not at midnight exactly, as far as I can remember.’

The first baby born in Edinburgh was Mason White, who arrived at 1.03am yesterday and weighed 8lb.

He was born at the maternity department at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Proud mother Carolann Horsburgh said she was relieved at having a ‘very straightforward’ birth. Her due date had been December 27, but Mason kept her waiting.

Elsewhere Marcie Reeves, who weighed 6lb 15 oz, was born at 12.39am at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, much to the delight of first-time mother Nikole Kidney and father Corey.

Miss Kidney, 19, from Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire, said: ‘She’s perfect.’

Just over two hours later at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital Jennifer Arnott, 37, gave birth to a boy at 2.55am.

Miss Arnott and fiancé Angus Campbell, 43, were delighted to welcome their son, who weighed 8lb 8oz. The new mother, from Ellon, Aberdeenshire, who got engaged in Paris in November, said: ‘He’s so content. His belly is full so he’s slept right through.

‘It’s great. It’s a memorable birthday.’
