Held at gunpoint, airport Briton who shouted: I’ve got a bomb

-

A BRITISH man who shouted at air travellers that he had a bomb was arrested at gunpoint by Dutch border police yesterday.

Pictures taken by passers-by showed him spread-eagled on the floor of Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. He was hustled away into custody and the area was evacuated.

A search revealed no evidence of any explosives, but with Europe on high alert in the wake of the IS terror attacks in Paris, no one was taking any chances. The incident took place in departure hall three at 8am. Passengers said the 29-year-old shouted out several times he was carrying a bomb.

Police spokesman Eric Vermeulen said: ‘This was a false alarm and the man is the only suspect. We think he was a passenger at the airport. We have to speak to him to find out his motives.’

The man held a British passport but the Dutch authorities did not reveal his identity. Mr Vermeulen said making false bomb threats is a crime in the Netherlands and the man is likely to face charges.
