‘Daley effect’ sends f ive-way frying pan f lying off shelves
WHEN TV cook Delia Smith praised a make of omelette pan, sales went through the roof thanks to the ‘Delia effect’.
Now Tom Daley has done the same for a £59.99 five-way frying pan after posting a picture of himself using one to cook a full English breakfast on Sunday.
The ‘Daley effect’ has seen the post shared 46,000 times, with hundreds of social media users asking where the Olympic diver bought the pan. Many used the hashtag ‘pan envy’.
By yesterday afternoon Lakeland, which launched the Master Pan in stores last week, said sales were up by 1,000 per cent. The store had sold its stock of the American product, intended to last for three months, within days, Master Pan revealed.
Daley, 21, who up to now has been admired for his diving skills and athletic physique rather than his prowess in the kitchen, is seen in the snap looking proudly at the camera as he prepares baked beans, sausages, bacon and eggs.
In a caption, the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist wrote: ‘Sunday morning full English breakfast for the American.’
Daley is understood to share a flat in London with his partner, American screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. Mr Black, 41, later uploaded a photo of himself with the meal, adding: ‘With all the curiosity around Tom Daley’s new pan, thought I’d share the result: #mesmerized. Just add #HP.’
The non-stick pan, which is oven-proof and fits in the dishwasher, sparked a lively debate after Daley sang its praises.
In response to Twitter user Rhiannon Noot, who said he had put the beans and eggs in ‘too early’, Daley replied: ‘It actually cooks everything at different heats, so it all finishes at the same time – the sausages did get more colour in them.’ He also wrote: ‘The middle is where the meat goes so the faster cooking comes in handy and it all finishes at the same time!’
Despite the breakfast fry-up Daley, who is preparing for the Rio Olympics this summer, proved he is still health conscious by posting another picture of the meal revealing a bottle of skimmed milk.
