Teenager dies after collapse at Hogmanay dance event

-

A TEENAGER has died after collapsing at a Hogmanay event in Glasgow.

Lee Kelly, 19, was found on the floor of the O2 Academy venue in the early hours of January 1, towards the end of a dance music show, which was hosted by Clyde 1 DJ George Bowie.

The student, pictured, was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment but he died on Sunday.

Police Scotland said last night an investigation was under way and a post-mortem examination would be held.

Yesterday, shocked friends paid tribute to Mr Kelly on Facebook. Jamie Downie wrote: ‘Gutted, RIP Lee Kelly, God bless.’ Debi Dawson added: ‘Rest in peace fella. Definitely be missed loads. Xxx’

Though it is unclear why he fell ill, it is understood that one line of inquiry for the police will be whether the Glasgow Clyde College student had taken drugs.

Officers were called to the O2 Academy at around 4am on Friday, during the annual GBX Anthems event broadcast live on radio station Clyde 1.

It was previously held at The Arches in Glasgow, which closed its doors in June having lost its nightclub licence following a 30-year-old woman being found outside unconscious. A total of 15 people were reported to prosecutors over drugs offences.

Last night, a spokesman for Police Scotland said: ‘Just around 4am on January 1 police were called to a report of a man collapsed within the O2 Academy. He was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he died on Sunday, January 3.’

No one was available for comment at Mr Kelly’s family home in the city’s Gorbals area last night.
