George is cute as a button, but where are his parents?

-

Time doesn’t just fly, it has supersonic wings. For it seems like yesterday when Prince George was a snuggly nugget of a baby, held in his mother’s arms outside a London hospital, the country’s first glimpse of a future king.

Now here he is, tramping along on his sturdy legs, attending his first day at nursery school, as cute as a button in his little anorak and rucksack.

To mark his debut at Westacre montessori School nursery in Norfolk, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released two official photographs. They were taken, as usual, by the Duchess herself in a controlled exercise designed to protect his privacy.

And quite right, too. Yet i did think there was something important missing from this momentous occasion and these special images — the parents.

it would have been cockle-warming in the extreme to have seen William and Kate waving goodbye to their firstborn as he skipped off to school. Just like Charles and Diana did way back when, both with Harry and with William himself.

For if we are to have a Royal Family and if we are to be emotionally invested in them, then privacy fiend Prince William is going to have to learn to be a little more giving.

No one wants to invade the privacy of innocent little children going about their business.

However, if the royals want to t hrive and f l ourish i n public affection, if they wish to repay the financial and emotional investment this country makes in them, then the Cambridges are going to have to let the light in — just a tiny bit more. Just a chink!

Or else they run the risk that, ultimately, people will just stop caring about them.
