The Alps? No, January in Brrr-itain

- By Victoria Allen

A WALL of snow, blue skies and skiers in their element – it could be a scene from an Alpine mountain.

Actually, this was the Lake District yesterday after sub-zero temperatures dumped a flurry of snow several inches deep on to its famous peaks.

The Arctic conditions brought skiers out in force on to Blencathra, one of the area’s highest peaks at more than 2,800ft.

The Highlands has already had its fair share of wintry weather, and a lemur got its first taste of snow at the Black Isle Wildlife Park near Inverness. Scots are set to wake up to a winter wonderland over the weekend as temperatures plummet.

Last night the country was hit by the coldest spell of the winter so far with the mercury plunging to -10c. Today there are warnings for snow and ice covering most of the country, as standing water and partially melted snow may turn to hazardous ice.

Graeme Whipps of the Met Office said: ‘Clear skies and cloud cover will bring the weather we expect from winter this weekend.’
