ARE YOU AT RISK FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES?

-

HERE is a simple test you can do to see whether you have a high chance of developing Type 2 diabetes in the next ten years.

It’s not foolproof, but does give a good indication of whether you are especially at risk. Simply answer the questions below:

1. Do you have a diabetic parent or sibling? If yes, add one point.

2. Being treated for hypertension? If yes, add one point.

3. Are you from a non-white ethnic background? If yes, add one point.

4. Are you aged 50 to 59? If yes, add one point.

5. Are you over 60? If yes, add two points.

6. Is your waist more than 35in but less than 42in (measure your waist around the belly button, not your trouser size)? If yes, add one point.

7. Is your waist more than 42in? If yes, add two points.

8. Now let’s work out your Body Mass Index score. The easiest

way is to go to a website such as nhs.uk/tools/pages/healthyweightcalculator.aspx which will calculate it for you, or simply type ‘calculate BMI’ into your internet search engine. Using those results, is your BMI 25 to 30? If yes, add one point.

9. Is your BMI 31 to 35? If yes, add two points.

10. Is your BMI over 35? If yes, add three points. Now add up your total score.

LESS THAN THREE POINTS: You have a low risk of becoming Type 2 diabetic in the next ten years.

THREE TO FIVE POINTS: You have a moderate risk of becoming diabetic, and as you get older this risk will increase. Check your blood sugar level and consider making lifestyle changes.

MORE THAN FIVE POINTS: You are at high risk of becoming diabetic. You should definitely have your blood sugars tested and aim for lifestyle changes, such as significant weight loss and increased activity.
