Caught, the eight-armed bandit

- By Moira Kerr

WEIGHED down with a bellyful of stolen prawns, this octopus made a very obvious suspect when a fisherman discovered his catch had been snaffled.

Justin Cameron found a creel full of empty shells and one well-fed cephalopod at Loch Sunart at the head of the Sound of Mull.

The 35-year-old from Kilchoan, Argyll, said: ‘You don’t usually see an octopus in the winter, this was the first I had seen for ages.’

His dog, Norman, who accompanies his master at all times, had never seen an octopus before. The inquisitive terrier immediately confronted the stranger.

Mr Cameron added: ‘I took the octopus out of the creel but when it saw the dog it ran away, right up the wheelhouse of the boat.

‘It had eaten every last prawn. They suck the middle out and leave all the shells.’

After taking photographs, to Norman’s bemusement, he threw the octopus back.
