Escape the city for the beauty of Wester Ross

-

ESCAPE from the stresses of the 21st century in Wester Ross in the north-west Highlands – one of Scotland’s last great wilderness areas.

In winter, the drama of the landscape is unforgettable and as there’s less cover, it’s also a great time of year to spot fascinating wildlife such as golden eagles, red deer and possibly goldeneye ducks on lovely Loch Maree.

Enjoy some l ower l evel walks exploring Britain’s oldest National Nature Reserve at Beinn Eighe, or head for some of the lofty peaks in the area if you have the correct equipment and experience of winter walking in Scotland.

Visit famous Inverewe Gardens on a promontory of Loch Ewe or walk along miles of deserted sands at Firemore beach near the village of Poolewe. Along the coast, take a hill trek towards Fisherfield from stunning Gruinard Bay or relax on t he magical beach of Mellon Udrigle.

Further north, you can gaze across three billion years of wilderness in the North West Highlands Geopark and uncover stories of ancient oceans and vast deserts at the Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve in Assynt.

Finish the day in the picturesque fishing town of Ullapool, where you can enjoy fresh seafood from the award-winning West Coast Deli and witness foot- stomping traditional music at the l egendary Ceilidh Place. www.northhighlandsscotland.com
