Make your make-up last all day
NO MATTER which brand I buy or how much I spend, I can’t seem to get my make-up to last all day. Within hours, my foundation is patchy and my lipstick is gone. How can I ensure it stays in place? It’S all very well applying fabulous make-up — but it’s no good if you constantly have to check whether it’s still intact throughout the day.
Facialist Cherry Woods, of Cherry Woods Skin Clinic in richmond, London (cherrywoodsclinic.com), says preparation is key.
For your lips, she advises exfoliating with a cream-based product — try Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub (£14, lookfantastic.com). then, before applying any colour, moisturise with a lip cream, such as Avene Cold Cream Lip Cream (£8, Boots).
For the face, first apply a primer. I love Makeup For Ever radiant Primer (£24, debenhams.com), which comes in a variety of shades (I like Peach). It evens out skintone, using reflective pigments to neutralise imperfections and banish dullness.
then, for a lasting finish, after primer and foundation, use a translucent powder, such as rimmel Clear Complexion transparent Powder (£3.99, Boots), and a setting spray. Urban Decay All Nighter (£21, feelunique.com) is a fine, weightless mist that you spray over your entire face to lock in make-up and stop it settling in fine lines. I HAVE some scarring on my face. Can you recommend make-up to conceal it? ‘IF thE scars are fresh, do not apply make-up until any stitches are removed and the skin has healed,’ says Dr Noor Almaani, a consultant dermatologist at the Private Clinic of harley Street.
‘Keep your routine simple and try to use the bare minimum, cutting out toners and exfoliants. Go for mineral product ranges, such as BareMinerals (bareminerals.co.uk), and keep the area well moisturised with Vaseline twice daily.
‘It is also important to use sun protection to reduce pigmentation at the site of the scarring.’
For older scars, Colorescience is a calming mineral range. the Skin Calming Primer SPF20 (£38, beauty-product-online.co.uk) will help to soothe irritated skin and reduce any discolouration or redness in the scar.
Another great option for older scars is AmazingConcealer (£29.50, marksandspencer.com), which comes in ten shades and conceals everything from dark circles to rosacea and scarring. SINCE I started wearing glasses recently, I’ve found that my make-up looks wrong. Should I be wearing more? StArt by giving eyes definition, says Emily Clarkson, who works with Superdrug Opticians. ‘Blend a kohl liner into the lash line and add lots of mascara to give your eyes more definition.
‘If you wear square-shaped glasses, lightly shade the cheekbones and add a small amount of blush to the apples of the cheeks to soften the look.
‘If you have smaller glasses, defining your eyebrows can really help frame your face. Use a light colour and gently distribute this through the brows.
‘Other tricks are to use a nude kohl liner along the lower, inner lash line and flick darker eyeliner on the upper lash line to really draw attention to your eyes.
‘Finally, balance your features with bold lip colours.’
For those with smaller eyes, Vanesa Guallar, make-up artist for Boots Seventeen, recommends eye shadows in light, pearl tones, as darker shades can make eyes appear even smaller.
try Bourjois Little round Pots (£6.99, Boots) in Gris Delicat, a pearly silver, or pinky-nude Marron Glace. She adds: ‘If you have big eyes, you can afford to go a bit heavier with eye make-up.’
