First-floor living

Former stables is an idyllic country home, says Jenny Shields

CONVERTING a stable block is nothing new these days – in fact finding an old one to do up is often the problem – so it is heartening to come across one where a lot of thought has gone into the process. It doesn’t have to be wildly luxurious to rate as successful, just carefully planned and well executed. Bellsgrove Stables near the village of Strontian in Argyll stands in just over an acre of land, giving it solitude in the midst of some spectacular Highland scenery.

From a distance, as well as up close, the building looks remarkably low key, leaving the natural beauty of the local stone and the original uncomplicated design to speak for itself.

A simple porch has been added to the property and this cleverly doubles as a terrace for the first floor. Bellsgrove has been designed with its living room on the upper level – in keeping with the old tradition – to maximise the light.

The main space is an open-plan sitting/dining room which has access onto the terrace. There is a separate, good-sized kitchen with quality AEG and Smeg appliances and a utility room. The master bedroom and en suite bathroom is also on this floor.

On the ground floor, which is reached by the engineered oak staircase, are a guest bedroom suite, two more double bedrooms and another shower room. There is also a l arge s t ore r oom, which could be handy in this part of the world for outdoor gear.

Bellsgrove is not a large house, but the attention to detail is strong and there are lots of features to commend it, such as the under-floor heating, a ground- source heat pump and double glazing throughout.

Strontian, which stands at the gateway to the beautiful Ardnamurchan peninsula, has a good range of local amenities, while Fort William is an hour away.

Offers over £380,000 to Strutt & Parker.
