Why JK is having to paws for thought

- By Xantha Leatham

THERE are few things so frustrating for a novelist as writer’s block.

But it seems Harry Potter author JK Rowling has discovered a new distraction – writer’s dog.

Miss Rowling is trying to finish her latest Cormoran Strike novel, written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

But she keeps getting interrupted by her rescued greyhound Sapphire, who cannot decide whether or not to be in the same room.

The 50-year-old author disclosed online: ‘I’d have finished this book months ago if my dog could only make up her mind which side of the door she’d like to be on.’ Fans responded by posting pictures of their own animals getting in the way of work. Ailis Steele uploaded a picture of her chocolate labrador standing halfway through a door, its glass missing, captioned: ‘After Jasper here jumped through the screen door we no longer have that problem.’

Vicki Clements posted a picture of a mug depicting the everyday battle, with the message: ‘Plan for today: Let the dog in. Let the dog out. Let the dog in. Let the dog out...’

One diehard fan with the Twitter name Loony-Lunar-Lupin uploaded a snap of her dog with its head across her laptop, making it completely impossible for her to work.

Nor are dogs the only animals to get in the way – another picture shows a cat looking up through a see-through door, pleading to be let in.

‘Cats are just as bad,’ wrote the owner. ‘Doesn’t matter which side of the door they’re on, it’s bound to be wrong.’

Miss Rowling adopted Sapphire in 2007 after taking her family to Greyhound Rescue Fife to see if any animals there caught their eye. They fell in love with Sapphire and took her home after donating £1,000 to the shelter. Miss Rowling also has a Jack Russell terrier named Butch.
