Police probe as baby lef t f ighting for life

- By Rachel Watson and Joe Stenson

A FIVE- MONTH- OLD baby is fighting for her life after an incident in her home at the weekend.

Hayley Davidson was taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon after police expressed concern for her welfare.

The home she shares with her mother, Catherine Davidson, in Buckhaven, Fife, has been cordoned off by police along with another property on the street, believed to be that of her mother’s boyfriend Gordon McKay.

Hayley’s condition has been described as ‘critical’, while one relative confirmed that she is not able to breathe for herself. An investigation into the circumstances has been launched.

Neighbours say that police and forensics officers have been at the properties since Sunday afternoon.

They have been seen combing gardens and bins but no one has yet been detained.

Last night a family member, who asked not to be named, said: ‘Hayley is not breathing by herself. All I’ve seen is all the police and they were taping it all up. I knew right away that something was wrong. I’ve not slept.

‘My head feels like it’s going to explode. When I last saw her she was fine, a happy wee baby. Now she is lying in hospital and she’s only five months old.’

It is believed Hayley’s mother is keeping a vigil by her bedside, along with Mr McKay. Mrs Davidson also has two older daughters, aged five and three.

One of Mrs Davidson’s neighbours said police had been asking residents when they had last seen Hayley.

The young woman, who did not want to be named, said: ‘They said they were concerned about a five-month- old bairn. They kept asking me when I last saw the baby or heard her.

‘The last time I saw her was Thursday. I didn’t know anything till I answered the door. Since then there have been two houses with police outside t hem constantly.

‘We’re not allowed to put anything in our bins. I’m quite worried, especially because I don’t really know what’s happened.’

Local councillor Alistair Hunter said: ‘It’s hugely disturbing. The thought of harm coming to any kid fills you with dread and fear.’

Mrs Davidson’s parents said that they did not want to speak when approached last night.

Police Scotland said: ‘Police in Fife were called to an address in West High Street, Buckhaven, around 12.30pm on Sunday following a report of concern for a child.

‘Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.’
