Cyclist killed in horror crash on sunshine island biking holiday

- By Ross Parker

A scottish cyclist has died after a collision with a lorry while on holiday with his cycling club.

Graeme mcGilvray is thought to have died at the scene of the accident, at a roundabout near Alcudia, majorca.

the 49-year-old, from helensburgh, Dunbartonshire, was visiting the island with 20 other members of clydebank-based Lomond Roads cycling club for their annual training camp in Port de Pollenca.

the island’s civil Guard are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy on tuesday.

mr mcGilvray’s wife, Jackie, 47, and his children, Euan, 14, and 12-year-old Rosie, were too upset to speak. But mrs mcGilvray’s brother, Douglas Fishwick, said: ‘it’s a great shock. We’re distraught and the children are devastated. Graeme was a real family man. he looked after his wife and kids. they did everything together. We’re a very strong family and he was very much a part of that.’

mr mcGilvray worked for scottishPower for a number of years, initially as an engineer working on pylons before assuming a managerial role.

he was a very experienced cyclist, while his wife is recovering from a broken back after a cycling accident nine months ago.

David morris, a neighbour and fellow club member, said: ‘Graeme was a lovely man. When we were together you knew we would always have a good time – he doubled the fun to any ride or gathering he was on.

‘he had been out with the club to majorca in the past. he was a regular in summer and winter and on saturdays he would ride with the fast group doing 60-100 miles a day.’

majorca is a very popular cycling destination and at this time of the year the roads are packed with cyclists testing themselves on the tramuntana mountain range.
