Was the BBC’s Night Manager worth the money?

-

ALL CREDIT to the BBC for investing £20million in The Night Manager. It was worth every penny: I would pay twice the licence fee if this standard could be the norm. From episode one it exuded quality and class, proving that with the right acting and production talent we can still make the best TV in the world. The picture quality matches that of epic blockbusters. The digital cameras now used on TV drama are the same as those used in Hollywood. It was outstanding and could be even more so if we started investing in 4K picture delivery in the UK. Add actors who bring it all to life and you end up with TV magic. How fortunate to see the birth of a new star in Elizabeth Debicki. What an enchanting and delicate presence she has on screen. She has to be the new Audrey Hepburn. And what on-screen chemistry between her and Tom Hiddleston. KEITH MASSEY, Guild of TV Cameramen,

Bishopthorpe, North Yorks. We MUST have a sequel if only to find out the answer to the burning question, whether angela Burr, well played by Olivia colman, gave birth to a boy or girl. Wouldn’t it be good to have her multi-task in the next one, carting her baby around on her hip. Great stuff!

JOY JAMES, Nottingham. TERRIFIC critique by Jan Moir (Mail), but how can she omit the amazing Tom Hollander as Corky? Oh that restaurant scene, with his drunken indiscretions and insults to the waiter.

SUE WEAVER, London SW14. JAN MOIR writes of ‘Dread and fear — now give me more’ (Mail). Is there not enough torment in real life without encouraging it as entertainment? Those already able to watch dramatised cruelty (torture of a woman) are being even more acclimatised to it. Those with an aggressive nature are being encouraged to copy it. Those who are already suffering from or with those affected by the real thing can only be further traumatised. It’s disappointing that this should be voiced by a woman, once the more caring sex.

Mrs BETTY SPANSWICK, Crewkerne, Somerset.
