Headphone yob’s swing at Campbell

- By Jemma Buckley Showbusiness Reporter

BBC presenter Nicky Campbell told yesterday how a youth lashed out at him after he told him to turn his music down on a tram.

He said a ‘belligerent sweary lad’ took a swing at him after he politely asked him to turn his music down.

The 55-year-old was travelling on the Metrolink in Manchester yesterday when he approached the youth who ‘had headphones so loud all could hear them’.

After the man tried to hit him, the Radio 5 Live presenter threatened to call the police. He said he was then met by ‘shouting’ and a stream of expletives from the youngster.

The father of four teenage daughters, who lives part-time near the BBC’s HQ in Salford, said he had been left shaken by the incident. He posted on Twitter: ‘Man on Manchester tram had headphones so loud all could hear them. Politely asked him 2turn em down and he took a swing @me. C**p music too.’

When asked if he had called the police or for assistance on the tram, he replied: ‘I threatened to call and it turned into a stream of c words etc. Much shouting.’ He added: ‘Still a bit shook.’ It was unclear last night if the incident had been reported to Greater Manchester Police. A spokesman said: ‘We would always recommend people contact the police if they feel threatened by someone’s behaviour on public transport.’

It is not the first time Campbell has felt the consequences of facing up to those committing anti-social behaviour. He was once spat on after confronting teenagers who had kicked open a bin bag and were spreading litter around.
