WATCH OUT FOR ...

-

SOPHIE Louise Dann (below), who was one of the stage stars of the lovely musical Bend It Like Beckham. She will perform for one night only, on April 29, at the St James Studio as part of the London Festival of Cabaret in a revue called Bernstein Revealed; and will sing several numbers — accompanied by Jason Carr on piano — associated with Leonard Bernstein, like Something’s Coming from West Side Story; I Can Cook Too from On The Town; and rarities from Peter Pan, MASS and others shows. Sophie Louise said the evening is a ‘vocal workout’ for her. She put it together with Carr and writer Edward Seckerson, and they hope to perform it more in 2017, Bernstein’s centenary year. MICHAEL CRAWFORD (below), who will be joined in Richard Taylor and David Wood’s musical version of the novel The GoBetween, by Stuart Ward and Gemma Sutton as a pair of illicit lovers. The younger version of Crawford’s character acts as an intermediary in their affair. Issy Van Randwyck will play one of the disapproving parents. Roger Haines, the show’s director, will begin pre-rehearsal sessions in London on Monday; and the musical will begin previewing at the Apollo Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, on May 27. BRYAN DICK, who will stay on with the West End-bound touring production of Hobson’s Choice, starring Martin Shaw. The play is presently on the road and transfers into the Vaudeville Theatre from June 8. Mr Dick had been cast as the leading man in the new version of Half A Sixpence that opens this summer at the Chichester Festival Theatre. However, the show’s producers decided, belatedly, that they wanted a younger actor to star. A statement from Chichester said only that the theatre had ‘agreed to release’ him, so he could participate in Hobson’s Choice. SHERIDAN SMITH, who has a bigger stage to weave her theatrical magic on, now that Funny Girl has transferred from the minuscule Menier Chocolate Factory to the Savoy Theatre. Director Michael Mayer, choreographer Lynne Page and designer Michael Pavelka have expanded the production, adding six members to the chorus and by tonight, a couple of big, set-piece dance numbers. The book has been sharpened by Harvey Fierstein and the acting is more potent, with Ms Smith discovering she has more funny bone than she realised; and co-star Darius Campbell is upping his game, too. A lot of the limited run at the Savoy has sold out, but there are still tickets if you seek them out.
