THIS IS WHAT 71 LOOKS LIKE

- Interview by JOSIE GOLDEN

Jill Schaverien lives in Kingston, Surrey, and runs a performing arts school. She has two daughters.

DO A DIY FACIAL

EVERY other day, I take 20 minutes to treat myself to a DIY facial. I have an Ultratone gadget (ultratone.co.uk) which gives my facial muscles a workout, helping to restore my skin’s firmness and elasticity. It’s supposed to gently stimulate and enhance circulation — I call it my facelift without pain! I put a blob of Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque (£35.70,

lookfantastic.com) onto the Ultratone before working it into my skin. It’s full of vitamins, some of which we lose as we age, and feels lovely and refreshing.

GO ON HOLIDAY ALONE

NOTHING restores vitality like a sense of adventure. I often go on ‘singles holidays’ — it’s a great way to experience something new, stay mentally engaged and meet new people. I learnt to ski at 50 and recently had a scuba diving and snorkelling holiday. The younger your mind, the younger your appearance.

FORGET MAKE-UP RULES

I LEARNT at a make-up lesson to emphasise my large, dark eyes. Many people over 50 — let alone 70! — think they’re too old for dark make-up, but I disagree. Defining your eyes is attractive no matter how old you are and can distract from lines and wrinkles. I wear lashings of black mascara and use waterproof liner on my upper eyelids and my lower waterline. To keep my lashes long and thick, I coat them in a strengthening overnight treatment every day.

DANCE!

KEEPING fit and trim is essential to staying young. As you age, lack of exercise can cause your body — and mind — to become sluggish, and this can show on skin as well as physique. Making exercise fun is essential — you’re never too old for a good dance! I attend a body-toning jazz dance class and a Pilates class twice a week that involves a challenging two-minute plank.

MAGIC AWAY WRINKLES

MAKE-UP can be very youth-enhancing, but the key is in preparatory steps. Use a good primer under foundation to nourish skin while acting as a smoothing base. Charlotte Tilbury’s Instant SoftFocus Beauty Flash Primer (£38.50,

charlottetilbury.co.uk) is a must-have for mature skin. Sweep over skin, particularly in areas with lines and wrinkles, and the cream will ‘fill in the cracks’, for a smoother, firmer-looking surface.
