Mother sobbed telling officers how Liam died

Murder trial hears police interview

- By Vic Rodrick

A COURT yesterday heard a mother accused of the murder of her son describe the moment she saw the toddler dead in his bedroom.

Rachel Trelfa, 31, is accused of killing two-year-old Liam Fee, along with a catalogue of abuse charges.

A jury at the High Court in Livingston heard Trelfa, also known as Fee, sobbing during the police interview recorded in the early hours of March 23, 2014.

She told police that she heard a ‘bloodcurdling scream’ coming from the toddler’s bedroom and her co-accused Nyomi Fee calling ‘Rachel, Rachel, Rachel’. She said she panicked and ran from the living room of their home near Glenrothes, Fife, into Liam’s room.

Trelfa told police: ‘As I got in, Nyomi was just putting Liam on the floor. I immediately saw he was pure white and lifeless.

‘I shouted, “What the f***?” and Nyomi said, “I don’t know. I don’t know”.

‘I then told Nyomi to phone 999 and get the ambulance. She put Liam down on the floor. As Nyomi was phoning I went over and looked at him thinking, “Oh my f***ing God”. I was lying on the floor touching him trying to check his airway.

‘I remember moving his head back, lifting his chin a bit. As I did this Nyomi said “Let me do it” as the person on the phone was telling her what to do.’ She added: ‘I was a wreck.’

Trelfa and Fee, 29, are accused of murdering Liam by repeatedly inflicting blunt force trauma on his head and body on March 22, 2014, and trying to defeat the

ends of justice by blaming a seven-year-old boy for killing him.

They are also charged with child neglect and abuse charges involving Liam and two other boys in their care, including the one they blame for the murder. They are said to have forced the children to take cold showers as punishment for wetting the bed. They deny all the charges against them. Trelfa said that as she walked out of the bedroom where Liam was lying dead, the seven-year-old was standing at the door.

She said: ‘As soon as I saw him I could just tell by his face that he’d done something so I ran at him and grabbed him by the tops of his arms. I started shaking him screaming “What the f*** have you done?”

‘He had this look on his face I can only describe as emotionless and blank.’

The trial continues.
