McBoatface scuppered as Attenborough gets the nod

-

MORE than a hundred thousand social media users jokily voted to christen it ‘Boaty McBoatface’.

But ministers have now revealed the Government’s new polar research vessel will instead be named after veteran broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.

Yesterday, science minister Jo Johnson said the novelty name, which topped the poll, would still be used but given to a submarine on board the £200million boat.

‘Boaty’ gained more than 124,000 votes in the poll staged by the Natural Environment Research Council.

However, in a compromise, Mr Johnson said it would adorn a remote-controlled yellow sub, while the research ship will be named RRS Sir David Attenborough.

More than 10,000 voted to name the vessel after the wildlife documentary presenter.

Sir David, who turns 90 on Sunday, said: ‘I am truly honoured by this naming decision and hope that everyone who suggested a name will feel just as inspired to follow the ship’s progress as it explores our polar regions.’

Mr Johnson said: ‘While it was a difficult decision I’m delighted that our state-of-the-art polar research ship will be named after one of the nation’s most cherished broadcasters and natural scientists.’

The 420ft, 15,000-tonne ship will be built in Merseyside, supporting 400 jobs and 60 apprenticeships, and is due to set sail in 2019.
