Bike crash British girl loses her fight for life

- By Liz Hull

A BRITISH backpacker badly hurt in a cycling accident in Australia has died.

Salvation Army volunteer Amy Haskew, 25, suffered head injuries last month when she lost control of her bike, plunging off a ledge in Mallacoota, Victoria.

She was put into a coma after being airlifted to hospital in Melbourne, where she was in intensive care for 34 days.

Her parents, Liz and Richard, 56 and 60, and older brother, Peter, 28, had flown from their Essex home to be at her bedside. But on Thursday they revealed: ‘Our precious Amy died peacefully this afternoon surrounded by family and friends.

‘Although heartbroken, we are so glad she is finally resting in peace.

‘She was having the best time, and is now dancing in heaven.’

Miss Haskew, of Romford, set off around the world with boyfriend Sam Tall, also 25, last November.
