BAIRSTOW TON TAKES HONOURS
JONNY BAIRSTOW and Jimmy Anderson were the heroes as England demoralised Sri Lanka on a remarkable day in Leeds. Bairstow hit 140, then held five catches as Anderson finished with figures of five for 16 as the tourists were skittled for just 91 on the opening day of the first Investec Test, before being asked to follow on. ‘It’s one of those days that won’t come around very often,’ said Bairstow. ‘There’s no better place to score a hundred than in front of your home crowd.’ After the tourists had stumbled to 12 for three, Anderson returned to end any hope of a revival with three successive wicket-maidens. Stuart Broad was then back to help finish the job in a hectic evening session, and Anderson appropriately struck the final blow when Shaminda Eranga became Bairstow’s fifth victim. Bairstow had dominated stands of 141 for the sixth wicket with Alex Hales (85) and then 56 for the ninth with Steven Finn after they stumbled to 83 for five on a rain-shortened day.
