Decorator Lucy’s painting herself a bright future

- SARAH HARRIS

LUCY PORTER has painted her way to a successful career after studying for a skilled trade.

The 24-year-old from Dudley, West Midlands, gained an NVQ level three in her painting and decorating apprenticeship at Walsall College in 2013. She then set up her own painting and decorating business, Porter Decorating, which is thriving.

‘After leaving school, I did A-levels and then went into admin work, but didn’t enjoy it,’ she says. ‘I discovered I enjoyed painting and decorating when a family member asked me to do some decorating. From that point, I wanted to do it as a career and never looked back.

‘I was cautious at first as it’s seen as a male environment, but there has never been any discrimination. I’m proud to say I’m a female painter and I get encouragement from women. More girls should go into painting and decorating; it’s good to have a trade.’

During the apprenticeship, in conjunction with Hankinson Painting Group, Lucy learned the technical side of the business: ‘College was great, but being able to develop skills in the workplace helped me to learn what the job is really like. ‘During my course, I won the regional final of the Dulux Apprentice of the Year and then went on to win 4th place in the national final. It gave me the confidence to set up my business.’ Lucy (pictured) believes more young people should consider apprenticeships and ‘earn and learn’ at the same time. ‘I love my job. When I wake up, I’m excited to go to work and look forward to each project,’ she says. ‘The best part is being able to put a smile on my clients’ faces, whether they want a complete restyle or just freshening up the woodwork. Being able to transform a dull room into a bright and clean space always makes me happy.’
