Corbyn’s ‘contempt’ for Scots electorate

- By Alan Roden Scottish Political Editor

JEREMY Corbyn has been accused of treating Scots voters with ‘contempt’ ahead of this month’s EU referendum.

The UK Labour leader will visit Aberdeen today to promote the Remain case, despite questions on his commitment to the cause.

Tom Harris, director of the Scottish Vote Leave campaign, said last night: ‘As a former Labour MP for Glasgow I’m disappointed to see Corbyn repeating his new Shadow Cabinet-approved line on the EU, namely that we should vote Remain.

‘What a pity he won’t be advocating his real view – and the one he’s been voicing for more than 30 years – specifically, that we should leave the EU.

‘That’s a particular pity for the Labour Party, given that we

‘Blinkered support’

expect up to half of Labour voters to vote Leave on June 23. Labour is dismissing and showing contempt for them by its uniform, blinkered support for a costly and undemocratic EU.

‘Lecturing working class voters that their concerns over immigration are “racist” will spell the end of the Labour Party.’

But Mr Corbyn said: ‘There are 12 days until people across Scotland go to the polls to vote in the EU referendum. What is clear is that if you want to remain a part of the EU you need to get out and vote for it on June 23.

‘There is a positive, optimistic case for voting to remain in a reformed European Union. Being part of the European Union gives us the ability to tackle the big challenges that we face as a nation – challenges that don’t respect national borders like dealing with climate change, tackling tax avoidance and standing together to avoid a race to the bottom on workers’ rights.

‘The Leave campaign cannot provide answers to working people who are asking serious questions about what a Tory Brexit will mean for their jobs and their families’ future.’
