MAKE THIS THE WEEK YOU . . .

PERK UP YOUR PATIO

- MANDY FRANCIS

SPRUCE UP WOOD NEVER use a pressure washer on wooden furniture — it can damage the surface. Instead, try a warm water and sugar soap solution with a soft scrubbing brush.

When dry, apply a layer of Ronseal Ultimate Protection Hardwood Garden Furniture Oil (£14.94, B&Q) to nourish and protect the wood. PLASTIC FANTASTIC SOAP and water won’t get dirt and mildew off plastic furniture. Instead, scrub with a solution of 3 tbsp dishwasher detergent — it contains a mild bleaching agent — dissolved in warm water. White toothpaste also works on stubborn stains on white plastic furniture. EASY RUST-BUSTER ON METAL furniture, use a 1:1 solution of white vinegar and water with a stiff brush. Rinse, allow to dry, then apply a layer of car wax to stop dirt and rust taking hold — try a spray wax, such as Halfords’ £4.99 option. WONDERFUL WICKER HOSE down wicker furniture with cold water — warm water can make it swell and distort — to remove dust and dirt.

Use a toothbrush and a water and washing-up liquid mixture to clean very dirty corners. Dry them in a shady area to stop the wicker from cracking and then buff the dry wicker with furniture polish and a soft cloth. STREAK-FREE GLASS WASHING-UP liquid and warm water are often more effective than a spray glass cleaner. Clean the underside of a glass table at least once a month.

Small scratches or chips can be fixed with a car windscreen repair kit, such as Rain-X Windscreen Repair Kit (£10, Halfords). When not in use, cover glass to protect it from the elements.
