Is it just ME?

Or is the end of in-flight food a tragedy?

- Marion McGilvary

SAY it isn’t so. British Airways will no longer serve complimentary meals on short-haul flights. I’m in mourning — a cheeky weekend mini-break will never be the same again.

Surely I’m not the only person who will miss them? I love in-flight meals — the teeny trays, the toy cutlery, the doll-sized cups with the plastic sealed infant portion of water, not to mention the pats of butter and those sachets containing just enough salt and pepper.

I even like the food. Of course, it’s not usually good — the ubiquitous chicken in tomato sauce with tepid rice, or the vegetarian option, which is invariably pasta, are never going to remind you of mama’s cooking, unless your mama worked in a prison.

But the point is that it’s free. Like the breakfast buffet on an all-inclusive holiday, you feel you’re getting something for nothing.

It’s also so cosy. Someone tucks you into the airplane equivalent of a high chair and

What nicer thing is there than a Lilliputian G&T as you bounce through the clouds?

serves it to you. It’s like a sky picnic, with a bar service.

Up the stewards come with their trolley and cater to your every whim. ‘Coffee or tea?’ — neither bearing much resemblance to the real beverage, but as it’s placed in the little dimple on your tray table, it makes me feel catered for.

And that’s even before we get to the funsize cans of Coke, the one-shot miniatures of vodka and the dinky bottles of Chateau Plonk.

Be still my turbulen ceinduced beating heart — what nicer thing is there than a Lilliputian G&T as you bounce through the clouds? It somehow makes it seem obligatory to drink at 11am.

Well, now it won’t be. BA will be offering premium snacks for sale.

Bear in mind that your tastebuds don’t work the same way in the air as they do in the departure lounge. So a sarnie that’s acceptable in Pret might taste like an old flannel in the cabin. And I bet it won’t come with an After Eight mint and a juice box.
