Hit and run thug jailed after victim left crippled

- By Grant McCabe and Wilma Riley

A DRIVER who deliberately ran over a woman and sped off has been sent to prison for six years.

Martin Duffy, 31, was part of an armed mob who attacked a flat in Paisley, Renfrewshire, on May 11 last year.

The gang wore masks, including a devil, a clown, a wolf and a pig.

Lisa Revie, who was in the flat, was left horrifically injured after confronting them as they tried to make their getaway.

Miss Revie, 36, was mown down as Duffy reversed a Mini into her at speed, before driving over her as she lay on the ground. She is unlikely to make a full recovery.

Duffy, of newton Mearns, Renfrewshire, was jailed at the High Court in Glasgow yesterday. He had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable and reckless driving by leaving Miss Revie injured to her permanent impairment and danger of life.

Prosecutor Allan nicol told the court: ‘Witnesses were returning [to the property] when they noticed a white Mini. The people from the car then left it and chased them.’

The group being pursued managed to get inside before the door was struck with a hammer and a knife.

Miss Revie then went back outside, opened the driver’s door and punched Duffy. As he tried to escape, she was struck by the door of the car as it reversed. Mr nicol said: ‘She was thrown into the air and cracked her head as she landed. She fell under the car. The vehicle was then driven forwards and over her lower half.’

Miss Revie, who suffered a brain injury as well as extensive fractures, was placed in an induced coma. Two weeks later, she was back in intensive care after two cardiac arrests.

The court was told she continues to use crutches and has memory loss and double vision, as well as ongoing pain in her head and neck.

Although no explanation was offered for the attack, Judge Lord Bannatyne told Duffy: ‘The motive appears to have been revenge for something.’
