No one cares

-

There is supposed to be care in the community for those who need it but what a joke this is. There is no such thing in today’s world.

I live in a rural part of south-east Scotland. I have cared for my husband who has dementia for 20 years.

I became very ill with a chest infection and was hospitalised. My dear husband of 85 was put into a nursing home. When I was better and discharged, I brought him home. There was, I was told, no home care to be found. I struggled with him — his dementia is advanced.

It was only a month later that I suffered a heart attack, Again I was put into hospital, but after five days I sweet-talked the consultant to allowing me home. I was told my darling husband was not coming home as it was too soon. Three weeks later, I was sent to Golden Jubilee hospital and had a stent fitted.

I wanted my husband home with me but I was told there was no home care package available. When I asked about the so-called care in the community I was told there is none if you live in a rural area. As the weeks passed and my husband was shunted from one home to another on ‘respite’ I kept asking for him to come home. The answer was always the same from the Social Services — ‘We cannot support you with home care.’

Now my husband, who has become increasingly confused and only wants to come home, has been admitted permanently into a home. I had no choice, it was either agree to this or face huge bills and no home care either.

Isn’t it ideal to keep a husband and wife together whey they loved each other so much? I would do anything for my husband with love and devotion, but I am not able to because of my own failing health and disability.

I lived for him and he for me, he keeps asking for me each day and I am devastated that he is not here at home with me. There is no such thing as care in the community. It does not exist as it is far easier to break up a happy loving home than to provide home care. I hope Nicola Sturgeon is proud of herself and her lack of home care for the elderly in Scotland.
