I can’t wait to see Britain go it alone

-

IN 1973, I was a 40-year-old hardworking farmer aiming to support a wife and two small children on a 400-acre holding that was mainly arable with a small sheep-breeding enterprise. I voted to join the Common Market, as it came to be known, on the grounds that I would be able to export my lambs into a much wider market and thus, hopefully, be rewarded with a decent price for my labours. What happened next? The French decided they didn’t like British farmers nosing their way into their territory, so responded by burning our lambs alive in the streets of Paris. Thereafter, the French didn’t abide by the rules on several occasions when they didn’t like them. Would you seriously want to belong to a club like that? Then Edward Heath gave away our fishing industry, and it has never recovered — consider the millions of tons of fish that have been caught and then thrown back in the sea because, according to EU rules, they were too small. Think of all the starving and needy poorer people who would have gratefully accepted this food — perhaps our own OAPs would have enjoyed a better diet. Would you want to belong to a club that wastes good food? For years, the EU has failed to produce an audit of its accounts. Do you want to be a member of a club that is so incompetent? I will be thinking of my two grandchildren — aged under ten — and what I want for them in the next decades when I go to vote on Thursday. It is certainly not the rubbish the scaremongering politicians are spewing forth in their attempts to persuade us to vote Remain. There can be only one box to tick that will see Britain become great again. On June 23, I will be looking forward to the best meal I will ever have — a Full British Brexit. BRYAN LILLYWhITE, Banbury, Oxon.
