Emotional Kyrgios is branded a ‘disgrace’

-

minutes after opponent Richard Gasquet retired injured. ‘You can learn from the matches you’ve played against him,’ said Murray. ‘See the things that worked well and try to execute that when you play him the next time. If I play as focused and as solid as I did today I’ll have a chance.’ Aussie bad boy Kyrgios — who was tearful later and admitted he had produced a ‘pretty pathetic’ effort — faced a barrage of criticism from three-time Wimbledon champion John McEnroe for his lack of focus during the fourth-round match on Centre Court. Although the first set was close, Kyrgios’ concentration dipped as the match started to slip away, taking little time in between points towards the end of the second set and then not even bothering to sit down at the change of ends during the third set. McEnroe told the BBC: ‘Disappointment would be an understatement in describing Kyrgios’ effort. You’ve got to dig in and play even harder instead of just throwing the second set away, which is what he did. ‘You can’t give away points and games against someone like Murray. You’re not going to make it to the top with that kind of effort. ‘Kyrgios has got to look in the mirror if he wants to become a top player and win Grand Slams.’ McEnroe also blasted coachless Kyrgios’ preparation for the match, with the 21-year old seen one hour before the match sitting courtside for Lleyton Hewitt’s doubles match on Court 18 and then entertaining Hewitt’s children. McEnroe said: ‘Maybe Lleyton should stop playing doubles so he can knock some sense into Kyrgios.’ Kyrgios said: ‘It was a good first set and the rest of the match was pretty pathetic. ‘When things get tough, I’m just a little bit soft. At times I’ve said I don’t love the sport but I don’t know what else to do without it.’ Aussie rugby legend Michael Lynagh tweeted during the match: ‘Well done Andy Murray. Give this guy a hiding. He is a disgrace.’ There was further good news for Murray late last night as possible semi-final opponent Tomas Berdych was taken to five sets by fellow Czech Jiri Vesely. They resume today. Reigning ladies champion Serena Williams was unhappy to play on at 5-5 in a tight first set of the fourth-round match against Kuznetsova with the grass becoming slippery. Williams said to umpire Cicak: ‘I’m going to fall. I don’t get it. Can’t they just close the roof?’ Cicak’s response was inaudible, before Williams then said: ‘If I get hurt, I’m suing.’ Gilles Simon made a similar threat over a slippery court during his defeat to Grigor Dimitrov last week. Cicak and tournament referee Andrew Jarrett conferred with each other and both players, then closed the roof. The break was the turning point. Williams, who later claimed her outburst was uttered ‘in the heat of the moment’, won 7-5, 6-0 to set up a quarter-final with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
