YOU HAVE YOUR SAY

-

EVERY week Money Mail receives hundreds of your letters and emails. Here’s what you had to say about our investigation into currency firms slashing their exchange rates for holidaymakers: I’M NOT worried: you still get a pound for a pound when you holiday in Cornwall.

C. B., Plymouth, Devon.

GET a prepaid credit card. Some give you the actual exchange rate without fees, so can be the very best deal every time you pay for something.

I went to Oslo for a weekend and just used my usual debit and credit cards — it cost me about £30 in fees. But two weeks in Canada with a prepaid card? Not a penny in fees. I’ll never use anything else.

M. R., Bournemouth.

THE tourist rate is never as good as the official one but these rates are just awful. It’s rip-off Britain.

C. B., Brighton.

I NEVER get currency in the UK. I use a Halifax Clarity card. It has no fees on purchases or cash withdrawals, plus you get the bank rate, not the tourist rate.

I fear ATMs in airports and shopping malls are rigged.

M. P., via email.

YOU always get ripped off at the airport, and not just on exchange rates. All the shops are expensive, too, as they know you are desperate or bored.

At Malta airport’s duty-free shop, you will pay more for a bottle than when you get out of Customs and go to the supermarket.

D. V., Durham.

GO TO a reputable money broker to get reasonable rates, not travel agents.

E. P., Birmingham.

I HAVEN’T been able to afford a holiday since 2007, but that’s OK. I live in a tourist area and gladly hand over my money to local small businesses, putting my hard-earned money back into the British economy during these uncertain times.

T. M., Devon.

THE thing to do is be sensible and plan ahead instead of panicking at the last minute.

Check currency rates on an independent online business or exchange site every few days and when you think it can’t get any better, go to a comparison site and buy at the best rate to collect from a High Street trader.

L. N., Shipley, W. Yorks.

SHOP online for the best rate for cash and get a credit card that doesn’t charge you when abroad — they use a better exchange rate based on the day of processing so the rate will vary over the holiday.

P. L., Hampshire.
