New deal to end strikes gives hope to rail users

- Daily Mail Reporter

SCOTRAIL has tried to end the strike action that has brought chaos to the railways – by offering to keep conductors on trains.

The RMT union said the offer would be circulated to members before it decides whether or not to axe industrial action planned for August 7, 8, 11, 13 and 14.

Under the new plans, drivers would still open and close the doors, but RMT members would keep the title of ‘conductor’.

ScotRail has insisted their jobs, pay and conditions have never been under threat and was unable to say yesterday what practical difference the new offer will make to their day-to-day role.

A ScotRail spokesman said yesterday: ‘At today’s meeting with the RMT we discussed a proposal that would see a conductor on new trains when they enter service next year. Further discussion will need to take place.’

In a circular to members, RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: ‘We are considering a way forward whereby conductors will be retained on EMUs (electric multiple units) in the network.’

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said: ‘I call for these strikes to be suspended and for all parties to focus on resolving this situation.’

But Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said Mr Yousaf had not done enough for passengers. ‘It’s an urgent situation that is causing distress and disruption,’ she wrote in a newspaper ‘What has been the reaction of the SNP Government? Virtually nothing.’
