UK’s oldest dog mauled to death

-

to be BRITAIN’S oldest dog has been mauled to death by a terrier on his morning walk.

Jack, pictured, turned 25 last year, making him about 117 in human years.

Owner Ray Bunn, 70, was getting the Yorkshire terrier out of his car for his walk when a Lakeland terrier raced towards them. Mr Bunn, a retired factory worker from Hartlepool, said: ‘The dog just came out of nowhere and grabbed Jack on his side. He wasn’t on a lead.

‘I was desperate to get the dog off Jack. I punched it, but it was about three minutes before it let go. Jack was bleeding heavily but still breathing.’

He and his wife Mary, 66, drove straight to the vets, but Jack died from his injuries before they arrived.

Mr Bunn said: ‘I am still in shock. We expected Jack to die quietly in his sleep, not in this horrible, violent way.’

Cleveland Police have logged the incident, which will be investigated to establish if any offence has been committed.
