Judy serves up secret to raising champions

- By Toby McDonald

JUDY Murray is to serve up the secrets of her family’s rise to sporting success, it was disclosed yesterday.

Tennis star Andy’s mother – who quick-stepped her way to national fame on Strictly Come Dancing – is to reveal all in her memoirs.

The 56-year-old, pictured, is believed to have signed a sixfigure deal for her ‘fascinating insight into how champions are made’, titled Knowing the Score.

The former British Fed Cup captain, whose son last night carried the flag for Team GB in Rio, is expected, to lift the lid on her relationship with the tennis establishment.

Yesterday Mrs Murray said: ‘I am thrilled to have the opportunity to tell my story, with the hope that hearing my experience can offer women the confidence and encouragement they need to overcome the inevitable obstacles they confront – not just in sport, but throughout life, in general.’

The daughter of former professional footballer Roy Erskine, she won 64 titles for Scotland during her junior and senior tennis career, turning professional around 1976.

However, she gave up a full-time career and studied French and business at Edinburgh University.

She began coaching and was the initial coach for both her sons, Andy and Jamie – also a Wimbledon champion – and is credited with developing their early skills before handing over the reins.

She and the boys’ father, William, were divorced in 2005.

The memoirs, co-written by Alexandra Heminsley, will be published by Chatto & Windus next summer. A spokesman said: ‘Judy Murray’s journey shows just what can be achieved with love, creativity and sheer hard work.’
