Carnage on the roads as five people lose their lives in four accidents on one deadly day

FIVE people have died in four separate accidents in only 24 hours on Scotland’s roads.

Two 23-year-old men were killed when their car was in collision with an articulate­d lorry on a country road.

Nairn Steele and Daryl Hunter were travelling in a Volkswagen Golf on the A723 near Strathaven, Lanarkshir­e, when it hit a Scania lorry.

Both men died at the scene just before 3pm on Wednesday. The 26-year-old lorry driver was not injured.

on Wednesday evening, a 23-year-old male motorcycli­st died following a crash on the A737 at Beith in Ayrshire.

The man was riding his Aprilia motorcycle around 6.35pm when he lost control and collided with a northbound Mercedes sprinter van and a BMW 3 series.

Emergency services attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 47-year-old van driver and a 46-year-old man driving the BMW were uninjured.

A 55-year-old man was killed in a crash involving a car and a lorry on the A77 in the South-West on Wednesday afternoon.

officers were called to the scene between Ballantrae and Cairnryan around 1.55pm. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

At 8.30am yesterday, a man was killed when his Toyota Yaris collided with an Iceland lorry on the B979 near Mason Lodge in Aberdeensh­ire.

Paramedics called to the scene of the collision found the Iceland lorry and red Toyota facing in the same direction on the narrow, windy road, although the vehicles were believed to have been travelling in opposite directions when they collided on a bend.

An Iceland spokesman said: ‘our thoughts are with the deceased and his family.’

Yesterday, tributes were paid on social media to Mr Steele, of Stonehouse, and Mr Hunter, of Larkhall.

Tamara Chapman said: ‘rip Daryl Hunter and Nairn Steele. Such a cruel world. Thoughts are with your families and friends.’

ricky rossi wrote: ‘Two cracking guys taken far too soon. Still hard to believe what’s happened. Definitely some memories with the pair of you. rIP Daryl Hunter & Nairn Steele.’

A Transport Scotland spokeswoma­n said: ‘As part of standard investigat­ions, officials will meet with the police and the road operating company to obtain more detailed informatio­n on the accidents which occurred on the trunk road network.

‘Accidents on local roads are a matter for the relevant council.

‘The Scottish Government is committed to reducing risk on Scotland’s roads and recognises that all that can be done to reduce accidents must be done.’
