THIS IS WHAT 52 LOOKS LIKE

-

Rhona WebsteR, 52, is a children’s community nurse. she lives in Great Yarmouth with her two children, shannon, 16 and Jude, 12.

WEAR FACIAL SUNSCREEN

A CONSULTANT plastic surgeon I met in the NHS once told me that we should be wearing SPF all year round — even if it’s overcast, the sun can still cause damage. This is especially true when it comes to the face, and the sun can age us faster than anything. She recommended Gelcream Light SPF50 by Heliocare (£22.80, amazon.co.uk). It also adds a subtle fake tan which is youthful in itself.

GIVE UP KOHL

MAKE-UP is an anti-ageing godsend, but as we get older we have to be careful. Thick, black kohl lining the eyes can exaggerate lines and dark circles and make us look tired — you just have to get used to not wearing it. Instead, I prefer a light foundation, a subtle pink lip gloss and, if it’s a special occasion, a soft eyeliner in a muted brown. Grown-up make-up just takes a few tweaks, and your complexion will thank you for it.

WISE UP TO SUGAR

I TRY hard to keep my clothes size between a ten and a 12 — being under or overweight can be ageing. But I don’t believe we need to follow strict fad diets, it’s all about eating healthy foods and reasonable portion sizes. The key is to understand where sugars are hidden — try to avoid foods labelled ‘low-fat’ as they often contain added sugar. Sauces, dressings and flavourings can be surprisingly high in sugar, too.

PRIORITISE YOUR TEETH

AS YOU get older, a bright smile can be so youthful. I haven’t had to spend a lot of money on my teeth because I take such good care of them and brush them up to six times a day. I carry a toothbrush and toothpaste in my handbag to use after I have finished eating or drinking — even if it is just a snack or cup of coffee, I make time to clean them.

SPLASH OUT ON PERFUME

SMELLING nice doesn’t exactly remove wrinkles, but I think having a gorgeous signature fragrance not only boosts our confidence but makes us feel more spirited, confident and young. Younger ladies wouldn’t be without a spritz of perfume, so why should we? I love a lightly fragranced replenishing spray that isn’t too sweet and over-powering, but is refreshing and soothing. Eau Ressourcante Serenity Freshness Replenish by Clarins is simply beautiful (£33, clarins.co.uk).
