Danczuk’s nights in Spanish jail cell after ‘row’ with his ex-wife

- By Emine Sinmaz

LABOUR MP Simon Danczuk has walked free from court after spending two nights in a Spanish jail over an incident that left his estranged wife needing hospital treatment. The Rochdale MP was arrested on Sunday after allegedly rowing with Karen, 33, while on holiday in Algorfa, near Alicante, with their two children.

Mr Danczuk, 49, yesterday appeared at a court specialising in crimes of violence against women, but no charges were brought and the case was dropped.

It is the latest scandal to hit the MP who was suspended from the Labour Party after being caught sending lewd text messages to a 17-year-old girl and asking her if she wanted to be ‘spanked’.

Earlier this month he also admitted to having sex with a 22-yearold woman in his taxpayer-funded constituency office after meeting her on Twitter just days earlier.

Witnesses said Sunday’s incident occurred after Karen took a phone call which led to Mr Danczuk accusing her of sleeping with someone else. He is said to have thrown her phone into a swimming pool.

An onlooker told The Sun: ‘She retrieved [the phone], went indoors and shooed him out. He began banging and screaming.’

Another added: ‘The whole neighbourhood was awake. Some got so concerned they ran over to intervene. Karen appeared to have a large cut to her chest. I think she had been cut by glass shattering. It looked quite nasty.’

A shirtless Mr Danczuk allegedly screamed, ‘Karen, Karen, I just want to talk to you,’ as he was led away in handcuffs by police.

Karen was taken by ambulance to hospital, where she was treated for the cut which officers said she sustained in a fall. Mr Danczuk appeared in court yesterday but was released without charge.

A court official in Alicante said yesterday: ‘Court Number One in Orihuela, which specialises in dealing with violence against women, has archived, at the petition of the State Prosecution Service, the case opened against British MP Simon Danczuk, who was arrested on Sunday on an alleged crime of domestic violence, after being reported by his estranged wife.

‘The man in question has today appeared in court. His estranged wife has also appeared in court and declined to ratify her initial statement.

‘After their appearance, the state prosecutor has called for the case to be shelved on the basis that the facts complained about have not been proven.

‘With the state prosecution request and with no other accusation existing, the judge had to shelve the case.’

Karen did not respond to requests for comment.

Last night Mr Danczuk insisted to close friends that he did not hit Karen and was not drunk when he was arrested.
