Follow-up
SHORTLY after the Falklands War, my four children and I sailed to the Islands to join my husband, who was project manager on the government initiative to build 54 houses there. The journey took 12 days, flying from Brize Norton to Ascension Islands, helicopter onto the deck of the SS Uganda and ten days sailing to Port Stanley. My husband met us when we arrived and said he had arranged for a friend’s wife to cook us a meal, as it was quite late in the day. We were to go to her home for dinner before we went to our house. Imagine my surprise when I got to the house to see a girl I had known in my childhood who had lived just streets away from where I grew up. She had settled in the Islands and had lived there for some years. It certainly is a ‘global village’. Mrs Maria Mills, Chatham, Kent.
