Debt-fuelled car sales are continuing to rise – but there are signs the nation’s love affair with credit cards could finally be cooling.

A total of £2.3bn was spent on car finance in July, 1pc more than a year earlier, according to figures from the Finance & Leasing Association. However, demand for store and online credit fell by 2pc with borrowing of £510m.
